Meet the Class of 2021: Megan Donovan
Mar 18, 2021
Megan Donovan’s laugh is so loud there’s a good chance you will hear her before you meet her.
Megan had plans to be an entertainment lawyer, but after working for a law firm one summer, she knew it wasn’t for her.
“I called my dad on day three and said, ‘I can’t do this,’ ” she said. “He always said I was born to be a veterinarian, so he told me to go to a veterinary conference that was going on in San Antonio that weekend.
My first lecture was on endocarditis.”
The rest is history.
Megan transferred to Sul Ross State University to study animal science and started working at a veterinary hospital on the weekends.
The Austin native will walk with her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine this spring at St. Matthew’s University School of Veterinary Medicine. An island student, Megan is on rotation at WSU’s Veterinary Teaching Hospital for hands-on practice.
She said what she loves most about WSU are the experienced veterinary technicians in the hospital.
“The techs that I’ve worked with in this hospital are so knowledgeable, amazing and generous. I’ve never worked with a more qualified, patient bunch. I feel so lucky to have worked with and learned from them. They set the bar pretty dang high,” Megan said.
Her plan after graduation is to move back to Texas and specialize in ophthalmology.
She will be doing a one-year small animal rotating internship next year back in Austin at Central Texas Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Hospital. Then, in 2022, she’s off to an ophthalmology residency at Animal Ophthalmology Clinic in Dallas.
“I love medicine in general. I love the people in the field. I love working with animals. From my very first lecture, I was hooked,” Megan said. “Even after really long days, I still am obsessed with what I do. I am truly such a fan of this whole industry.”
