Emma Ledbetter is a BIG fan of “Star Trek: The Original Series.”
Once upon a time, she even learned how to speak Klingon on Duolingo, a language learning app. She’s not quite fluent, though. With aspirations to be a science writer, Emma could very well be the first editor-in-chief at The Daily Evergreen to pursue a microbiology degree.
Where are you from and where did you graduate high school?
I am from Renton, Washington (about 20 minutes southeast of Seattle). I went to Hazen High School — go Highlanders!
What’s your favorite thing about or around WSU?
Honors Hall is definitely one of my favorite places on campus because I lived there for two years. I always had a great view of Thompson Hall while walking to class. It is also right next to Thompson Flats, so I spent a lot of time there with friends (sledding in the winter, playing volleyball or doing homework on the grass during the fall/spring). I also love The Daily Evergreen newsroom in Murrow Hall. I spent a lot of time working there (pre-pandemic).
What’s your favorite course you’ve taken at WSU?
This is cheating, but I'm currently taking four courses that complement each other really well: Microbiology (MBioS 305), Virology (MBioS 442), Epidemiology (MBioS 446), and an English class on the rhetoric of pandemics (English 361). They overlap so much that sometimes I forget what class I am learning something for. I love them all so much! But if I had to choose just one class, I really enjoyed Honors 380 with Vilma Navarro-Daniels, which was about South American films.
What are your career goals?
I am hoping to be a science writer! I was exposed to science writing through The Daily Evergreen, and I think it would be a great way for me to blend my passions of science and writing. I would love to work for a major newspaper in their science section or at a big research university like WSU working with both scientists and the public.
Do you have any pets?
I have one amazing 11-year-old dog named Boone. He is a miniature goldendoodle. I have bad allergies, so he has been the perfect fit for me because he is hypoallergenic.
