Q&A with neuroscience undergraduate Alexandra Malena

Mar 12, 2021

Neuroscience undergraduate Alexandra Malena completed the Los Angeles Marathon when she was just 17.

The Southern California native also has a Yorkie named Romie that will turn 12 years old next month. Alexandra is still searching for what her end job will look like but she knows one thing: “I want to go to graduate school and continue participating in research.”

Where are you from? What high school did you graduate from?
I am from Hawthorne, California. I graduated from Hawthorne High School. My high school mascot is a cougar, just like WSU!

What are some of your favorite hobbies?
For fun I like to get new piercings – I currently have nine! The next piercing I want is a helix ear piercing!

What is your favorite thing about or around WSU?
My favorite place around WSU is the Lawson Gardens because the flowers are super pretty and it’s very peaceful.

What’s your favorite course you’ve taken at WSU?
My favorite class I have taken at WSU is Sociology 336 taught by professor Sarah Whitley. Dr. Whitley would bring in different types of food to taste test so we could compare it to processed foods.

What’s a unique fun fact about you?
My favorite TV show is “Criminal Minds.” My mom and I always watched it since it first aired, so I grew up watching it with her. I like the show’s team dynamic and how it portrays the different reasons why criminals do what they do and their backgrounds. My favorite character is Spencer Reid because he’s the awkward kid that doesn’t really fit in, and growing up I related to him.
