Sue Ritter, long-time professor in Integrative Physiology and Neuroscience, passed away peacefully on March 14, 2021 at her home after a long illness.

Sue started at the college in 1974 as an assistant professor and she retired 46 years later with the distinguished title of Regents Professor Emeritus.  She made influential contributions on how we understand how the brain senses and responds to changes in circulating metabolic fuels. Her research has had significant influence on the fields of nutrition, diabetes, and obesity.   

Some of her many distinguished accomplishments include:

  • Member of the Washington State Academy of Science (2015)
  • Sahlin Faculty Excellence Award for Research, Scholarship and the Arts (2009)
  • Chaired 11 PhD thesis committees
  • Published 121 peer-reviewed studies
  • Maintained continuous NIH supported research funding for 43 years
